Label Types
Hem Labels
Tri-fold hem labels
Trifold hem labels are designed to fold in three places. Each end of the label has a turn-back allowance and then the label folds in the centre.
The labels can be sewn to the edge of an item often used on t-shirt hems.
Additional finishing: The ends can be hot cut which seals them and prevents the ends from fraying. This is most important for readily fraying materials like satin and our soft twill.
Hot cut hem labels
Essentially a centrefold label, this hem label has hot cut ends and just folds once in the centre.
The labels can be sewn to the edge of an item often used on t-shirt hems.
Additional finishing: The ends must be hot cut which seals them and prevents the ends from fraying.
Back Neck Labels
There are multiple types of label that can be sewn to the back neck or back waist of items.
Loopfold labels
Loopfold labels are labels that loop rather than fold. The labels typically have a seam allowance each cut end of the label and these two ends loop together and are then sewn into a seam.
Additional finishing: If the ends are not to be sewn into an enclosed seam or overlocked seam, the ends can be hot cut which seals them and prevents the label from fraying.
Manhattan fold labels
Manhattan labels are suitable for attaching to pre-made garments as the top edge is applied to the garment and not sewn into the seam. The top of the label had a turnback allowance into which the bottom edge tucks. The label is then sewn across the top edge, catching the underneath part into the tucked edge.
Additional finishing: These labels are best hot cut so that there is no chance of fraying and the result is tidy and durable.
Mitre fold labels
Mitre fold labels fold on 45 degree angles and have a seam allowance extending upwards to sew into a neckline or edge binding.
Endfold Labels
Endfold labels
Endfold labels generally have a horizontal layout and have a turnback allowance each end. The ends fold under and then the label is sewn down 1-2mm from the fold each end. It could alternatively be sewn the entire way around the edge of the label.
Additional finishing: The ends can be hot cut which seals them and prevents the turnback allowances from fraying underneath the label.
Single Layer Care Labels
Single layer labels
Single layer labels are hot cut or made from a non fraying tape and designed with a seam allowance at one end only.
Sew on Flat Labels
Straight cut labels
This type of label is hot cut and non-fraying. Generally they are sewn on flat to an item around all four sides.
Endfold labels can also be sewn on flat. See these here.
Side Seam Labels
Side seam labels
A side seam label is the same sort of label as a loopfold or centrefold label. The difference is generally the size and sometimes the text or logo is rotated so that the seam is towards the left (or right).
